Hare hare baans kata more angna...

I am a coke studio fan (both India and Pakistan versions of it). I know! I know, the Pakistan one is better as Indian one has too much bollywood involvement. But for me coke studio is one. Anyway, I wait eagerly for its new seasons. Currently watching season 8 and the music is superlative to say the least. However I was disappointed to hear this particular song-

Excellent singing, brilliant music but no attention paid on the lyrics. It's Amir Khusro's kalaam. A folk 'Shaadi Geet'. Here are the lyrics-

Hare-hare baans kata more angna, neeka mandha chhawao re

Parbat baans manga, more baabul, kanu mandha chhawao re

Sagre najoomi, jyotishi; baabul, sabka bhej bulao re
Jaiso laadli bitiya, re baabul; waisa hi kaaj rachao re

Mandhe oopar, kalas viraaje, dekhe raja rao re...

I don't remember the next line of this couplet but its definitely not what these singers here are singing. None of it makes any sense. I wish they do a little research before recording a song which is something that is going to go into the musical database of our time and will serve as a reference to the future generation of music.

Edit(20.02.2016):
I found these two versions of the song in Mehnaz Begum's (thanks to @drkns on twitter :) and  Bilqees Khanum/Ishrat Jehan's voices.

Listening to it repeatedly helped me understand a few more lines. Though there are a few words which are still not very clear to me.

Mandhe oopar, kalas viraaje, dekhe raja rao re
Ghode haathi soha deena, baabul dil dariyao(?) re

Ek na deeni sar ko ri kanghi, mori saas bol bolat hai
Sona bhi deena ropa bhi deena; deena (or 'Dee-Na') chatar(?) charhao re

    2. I'll try to translate literally since I am not sure of the actual context in which it was written.

(The girl who is about to get married says to her father) -
Father, get green bamboos cut, and get a pretty mandap* made (for me).
Get the bamboos brought from the mountains, and use them to make the mandap.
All the fortune-tellers, astrologers, Father; please invite them all.
How loved your daughter is; her wedding should be appropriate.
The holy pot sits at the top of the mandap, even the king should see it...

Sorry still couldn't figure out the rest of the lyrics; will update the post when I do.

*mandap-a porch like structure used for hindu weddings.

    3. It then goes on the to say: man main ooper kal as biraaje, dekhe raja rao re ghorey haathi sooha deena, babul de darya re.
It means that a cooking pot is in the veranda, being seen by the King as well, therefore my Father give away horses, elephants and gold like a river.
It was written by Hazrat Amir Khusru who is saying that he is in this world like a girl who is to be married off to Hazrat Nizam-ud-din Aulia and go to a distant spiritual land. Therefore his stay in this world is focused on preparing for that marriage and he wants to have the best spiritual beauty before he departs.

But then it was Khusrau...so I gave up thinking it must be persian words he's mixed in... Now with the correct lyrics, everything falls perfectly in place! Thank you ever so much! Would be really grateful if u cud pls try to find the rest of the lyrics and post them pls..

  7. Thanks for the post. Would like to post one little correction:

"Jaiso laadli bitiya re babul-2, vaisa hi kaaj/taaj rachao re.." ... This is actually waisa hi "da'aj" racha rey !

So, da'aj word has Punjabi influence, it means dowry...

    2. No sir, the correct word is 'kaaj' only. Kaaj in northern India means work or an event. We have been using this word for the event of marriage. We even pray to God that Prabhu more kaaj savariyon. Daaj word meaning dowry was not in use in the times of Amir Khusro. The next word 'racha' is also related to kaaj only and is not used with Daaj. Kaaj Racha means manage the event in a befitting way.

  9. Thanks for sharing the correct of the lyrics of this song.I was also disappointed ed with lyrics sung at the coke studio n many of the lines didn't make any sense.... would like to add a small observation......the word raja , rao in 13th-14 th century social milieu refers to the class of landed elite, who were very part of rural aristocracy.khusro's period is 13th - 14th century.
